3 ways to stop worrying about what other people think of you

vancouver life coachingWorrying sucks.

We all have been there – we worry about what other people think of us. It’s hard not to especially in a world where we are taught that approval is so important to our success.

This worrying can makes us feel like we are running around on a hamster wheel trying to catch something that we really have no control of.

The temptation is to conform, change and act in a way that’s more acceptable.  The only problem in doing that is that in the process we lose our uniqueness.

Over the years I’ve had to learn that it doesn’t matter what other people think of you, it matters what you think of yourself.  When that becomes your focus you will start to feel a whole lot happier 🙂

Here are 3 ways to stop worrying about what other people think:

1) Understand your why

What are you worried about and why does their opinion matter? If you can discover why you are putting so much energy into worrying about what others think, you can really get to the root of the issue and get out of the trap. Are you looking to feel valued, loved, accepted, or important? If you understand this then you are 90% of the way out of it.

Try asking yourself this question: What am I looking to get out of ‘x’ persons’ opinion of me and why does it matter so much?

 2) Learn to accept you for you

This process comes through a practice of self love. We are often our own worst critics and if we are judging ourselves then of course we are going to think that other people are judging us. Learn to stop criticizing yourself and instead replace it with supportive comments. This will create an inner confidence that won’t be shaken when you don’t get that external nod of approval.

Try giving yourself a compliment every time you notice a critical comment – replace that thought with something positive!

3) Stop judging others too

Of course we are worried about what other people think of us if we are constantly judging others. We unconsciously expect others to behave like us.  So if you can learn to watch and notice what is good about others than you will also increase your capacity for compassion and be more accepting of yourself. When you are judging you are putting negative energy out there that really just ends up right back at you.

Worrying about what others think is not an easy thing to let go of but with a committed effort it can be cured!  It starts by looking within and starting there 🙂

Happy Not Worrying!
